To Be or Not To Be – A Decision For Every Christian

2 Timothy 4:3-4 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.

We are called to be like Christ, not like the super nice Christian family down the street from you, not like your religious grandmother, not even like your good-tempered, successful parents. However ethical and moral these people in your life may be, they are not Jesus. We are called to model Him and no one else. We’re called to imitate the Jesus of the Bible in everything. Unless you’re doing that, unless you are selflessly following in His footsteps – in everything – who are really you following? The True Christ or a watered-down, personally created, comfort version of Jesus?

Forget what you see from other Christians.
Forget what you know about other Christians.
Forget all the ideas and notions you’ve formulated from the world about acceptable Christian behavior.

Forget it all…

Jesus is the only example for Christians. E.V.E.R.

We are called to be like Christ – like the CHRIST of the Bible alone!

In Mark 8:34 Jesus was speaking to everyone – ALL – no exceptions!  —》”And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he (Jesus) said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”

That doesn’t sound like many Christians you know does it? Truthfully, it doesn’t sound like me most of the time either. I try, I do, but it’s hard to live like Christ. It’s hard to deny ourselves. It’s hard to carry our cross and follow Him. It’s so hard that we begin to allow all of these contradictory, convoluted ideas, and worldly rituals to infiltrate our lives, minds, and hearts. They take over what we think following Jesus looks like and before we know it, we have our own personally created, comfortable version of Jesus. I know, I’m guilty of this too.

But let’s be clear – the Bible says…

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

I want the True Jesus, not a comfortable counterfeit.

Colossians 2:6-8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.

I want to be led by the True Christ, not some worldly imitation.

1 John 2:1-6 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, 5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: 6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

I want to keep His Words and abide in Him!

But what does the Bible say about those who chase after other versions of Jesus?

2 Timothy 3:1-5 Godlessness in the Last Days – 3 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.

Titus 1:16 They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.

Matthew 7:21 I Never Knew You – 21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

It is my sincere prayer that we take a long, deep, look into our hearts and minds – what is lurking there? Is it Christ or a comfortable, worldly counterfeit?

2 Corinthians 10:5 We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,

So the question is… to be or not to be like Christ?  I urge you to surrender yourself to Romans 12 & be like Christ. This is my prayer for us all. 🙂

Romans 12 A Living Sacrifice – 12 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

If you haven’t personally read the Bible, I strongly encourage you to. I don’t want you to just take my word regarding your Salvation or anyone else’s. These are serious matters that require personal attention. When it comes to Jesus, second hand info or opinion just doesn’t do Him any justice. How else will you intimately know who Jesus is and what He wants you to do unless you read it for yourself?

God bless you.

I am a daughter of God, a servant of the Lord, a wife to a patient husband, and a mama of two forgiving boys. God has placed these three men in my life needfully so. I thank Him for them everyday. And like so many of the Lord’s children, I am a work-of-glory-in-progress. I am on a journey to reclaim and renew my life in Christ. It took me 34 years to learn that when nothing else works, God does!

    • Thanks Levi. Amen to that – the molds around us are so much easier to slip into! As Ann Voskamp would say, I was preaching to myself but decided to share here in the hope that it’s truth hits home with many others!

      God bless.

  3. This is a great, great point… our overall goal is to imitate Christ. People try to make it so complicated, but it really is that simple!

  4. Profound, true, simple, but not easy and very easily forgotten! It is so easy to get diverted by others, this is a great reminder to recalibrate to the right place!
