Light and Darkness, Sin and Forgiveness
What we say equates to what we do, what we do equates to our witness in Christ. So the question is, are we liars of darkness or practioners of Truth? The difference is of eternal concern but to uncover the answer we must dig into God’s Word.
Let’s read 1 John 1:5-10. Pay special attention the meaning and significance of the different styles of text – Bold = Light of Truth or Italicized = lies of darkness.
1 John 1:5-10 – God Is Light
5 This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; 7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.
I hope the different text styles helped distinguish God’s definition between light and dark. If we go back and read only the bold portion, we’ll see that God made our objective completely clear – walk in Light!
Well, that’s good to know but where do we go from there?
1) We ask God to apply it to our lives by shining His Truth-filled Light of knowledge and guidance deep into our hearts exposing every darkness.
2) We work diligently with the Holy Spirit as He leads us in all Truth. The more Spirit-filled we become the more we walk in Light.
3) We remain mindful that we have an adversary in the darkness. He persistently sets enticing traps to catch and make us stumble.
4) We lean exclusively on God’s strength and power because we cannot do this our own.
5) We step out in faithfulness and complete Trust in God!
1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” And in John 10:10 Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy…” We can be sure that our adversary lives in the darkness and fights hard to gain ground in our lives. These strongholds hide themselves in seemingly innocent parts of everyday, normal life. They also come in the form of the lies we believe about ourselves and others. Lies (darkness, evil) literally keep us bound and blind.
2 Corinthians 10:4-5 – Pulling Down Strongholds – 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,
Despite what the enemy of lies would have you believe, it is NOT acceptable to stay, live, and walk in any behavior that doesn’t resemble Christ. We must seek out and uncover these footholds, then blind them with the Light of Truth.
John 1:5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
God bless you.
