Today’s reading: Bible Gateway Old/New Testament 365 Reading Plan January 8 2015
Today’s Old Testament reflection: Genesis 20-22
Abraham and Abimelek – Genesis 20 | recounts Genesis 12:10-20 but gives more detail and answers the question of who informed Abimelek of Abraham’s deceit – God did. v.12 also tells us that Abraham didn’t lie about Sarah being his sister (not of the same dad), but he did not tell Abimelek that they were married.
Birth of Isaac – Genesis 21:1-7 | God did as promised He is faithful. v.6 ties into Genesis 17:17,19.
Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away – Genesis 21:8-21 | Again Sarah struggled with the choices she made when she moved ahead of God’s plans and tried to do things her way. This section (v.8-21) powerfully shows us how God speaks to us, watches over us, protects, provides, and saves us.
Treaty at Beersheba – Genesis 22 | v.1 “…God is with you in everything you do.” – Yes! v.33 Abraham repeatedly acknowledged and God.
Today’s New Testament reflection: Matthew 6:19-34
Treasures in Heaven – Matthew 6:19-24 | Jesus clarifies our understanding of possessions and wealth – do not store treasures on earth where they rot and can be stolen but store treasures in heaven where nothing can destory or steal them. Where are treasure is, is where out heart will be. If we’re generous we’re healthy, if we’re stingy we’re unhealthy. We can’t serve both God and money. Chose God – God= heathly, giving. Money= unhealthy, stingy.
Do Not Worry – Matthew 6:25-34 | Jesus tells us NOT to worry about anything. Don’t worry about food, or clothing. The faithless chase after these things. God feeds the birds and clothes the flowers, how much more will He do for us. God knows what we need (Matthew 6:8). Have faith that when we seek His Kingdom, and Righteousness all these things (needs) will be given to us. Don’t worry about tomorrow, it worries about itself and each day has trouble all its own.
