Today’s Old Testament reflection: Exodus 14-15

Crossing the Sea {Cont.} – Exodus 14 | v.1-4 “God said to Moses…” God directed then, He knew what Pharaoh would do and God as always a million steps ahead. Pharaoh realized what a mistake he made by letting the Israelites go and he pursued them with 600 chariots – hard heart. v.10-12 people had no faith v.13-14 Moses had faith though. v.15 “Why are you crying out to me?…tell them to GO!” – how many times is this us, crying out to God 1st? v.19-20 God’s cloud – dark side to Egyptians, light to Isrealites. v.21-22 all night God sent a strong wind and told Moses to stretch out his hand, God divided the water – wall of water on each side. v.23-25 God looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud – He confused the Egyptians and jammed the wheels of their chariots. This caused them to say, “Let’s get out of here. God is fighting for them!” – God is not v.26 “God said to Moses…” stretch out hand over water so it will go back and flow over the Egyptians. – this just hit me, Moses had to act. God enabled him to do things, He didn’t just do it all for him, but gave him a part he had to do. v.27-28 by daybreak the sea returned – killed all of the Egyptian army – none left. v.30-31 the Israelites saw that God saved them and they trusted God and Moses.

The Song of Moses and Miriam – Exodus 15:1-21 | v.1 song about the awesomeness of God, His power, and the defeat of His enemies. v.18 ends with “the Lord reigns forever and ever.” AMEN – He sure does! v.19-21 Miriam the prophet – Moses and Aaron’s sister, sang with the women.

The Waters of Marah and ElimExodus 15:22-27 | v.22-24 needed water, none for 3 days, came to a place of bitter waters – Marah. v.25 cried to God – God showed him a piece of wood, he placed the wood in the water and it was fine to drink. v.26-27 God issued a ruling and instruction to them and put them to the test:
1) listen carefully to God
2) do what is right in God’s eyes
3) pay attention to God’s commands
4) keep all God’s decrees
Then He will not bring upon them all the diseases He brought upon the Egyptians. For He is the Lord who heals us – gives diseases and heals them. v.27 came to Elim – 12 springs, 70 palm trees – camped there.

Today’s New Testament reflection: Matthew 17

The Transfiguration – Matthew 17:1-13 | v.2 Jesus transfigured, face shone like the sun, clothes became white as light v.3 Moses and Elijah appeared talking to Jesus v.5-8 God appeared in a bright cloud and spoke to them. v.9-13 Jesus explained things to the disciples and they finally understood that Elijah had come already – John the Baptist.

Jesus Heals a Demon-possessed Boy – Matthew 17:14-21 | v.14-15 man knelt before Jesus, have mercy on me, my son has seizures, suffering greatly, and the disciples couldn’t heal him (unbelief). v.17 unbelieving and perverse generation, Jesus asked, “how long shall I put up with you?” v.18 Jesus rebuked the demon and it instantly came out – boy healed. v.19 the disciples asked, “why couldn’t we do that?” v.20-23 “because you have so little faith!”- can you imagine that? The disciples didn’t have enough faith?! Jesus said if they had faith as small as a mustard seed they’d be able to move mountains and nothing would be impossible for them! – definitely gives us something to think about.

Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time – Matthew 17:22-23 | v.22-23 Jesus told them He would be arrested, killed, raised to life after 3 days.

The Temple Tax – Matthew 17:24-27 | v.24-27 tax collector was probably trying to find something else to blame on Jesus – yes, He pays His taxes. Jesus told Peter to go fishing, he’ll catch a fish with a coin in it’s mouth to pay both their taxes. – oh, if it only were so easy for us! Or is it?

Jennifer – I Give God All The Glory

I am a daughter of God, a servant of the Lord, a wife to a patient husband, and a mama of two forgiving boys. God has placed these three men in my life needfully so. I thank Him for them everyday. And like so many of the Lord’s children, I am a work-of-glory-in-progress. I am on a journey to reclaim and renew my life in Christ. It took me 34 years to learn that when nothing else works, God does!
