Today’s Old Testament reflection: Leviticus 19-20

Various Laws – Leviticus 19 | “God said to Moses, tell the Israelites… ” keep all God’s decrees and laws and follow them (God repeats this statement several times in this section – it’s very important!).
1) Be holy for God is Holy.
2) Respect parents.
3) Observe God’s Sabbath.
4) Do not turn to idols or make metal gods.
5) Sacrifice fellowship offerings God’s way – eat within 1-2 days, whatever is left over on the 3rd day must be burned up. If someone eats it on the 3rd day, it is impure and will not be accepted. Whoever eats it will be held responsible, they have desecrated it, and must be cut off from their people.
6) Do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings when you harvest your land.
7) Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up fallen grapes – leave them for the poor and the foreigner {probably applies to #6 too}.
8) Do not steal.
9) Do not lie.
10) Do not deceive one another.
11) Do not swear falsely by God’s name and profane it.
12) Do not defraud or rob your neighbor.
13) Do not withhold the wages of a hired worker overnight.
14) Do not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, but fear your God.
15) Don’t pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly.
16) Don’t go spreading slander among your people.
17) Don’t do anything that endangers your neighbor’s life.
18) Do not hate a fellow Israelite in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in their guilt {reprove them}.
19) Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone, but love your neighbor as yourself (Leviticus 19:34, Matthew 5:43;19:16;22:39, Mark 12:31, Luke 10:27, John 13:34, Romans 13:9, Galatians 5:14, James 2:8).
20) Keep my decrees.
21) Don’t mate different kinds of animals.
22) Don’t plant your field with 2 kinds of seed.
23) Don’t wear clothing woven of 2 kinds of material.
24) If a man sleeps with a female slave who is promised to another man but she hasn’t been given her freedom, there must be due punishment. They are not to be put to death, because she had not been freed. He must bring a ram to the priest for a guilt offering to God. The priest makes an atonement for his sin and he will be forgiven.
24) When you enter the land and plant any kind of fruit tree, for 3 years regard its fruit as forbidden – it must not be eaten. The 4th year all its fruit will be holy, an offering of praise to God. The 5th year they can eat its fruit – this way their harvest will be increased
25) Don’t eat any meat with the blood still in it.
26) Don’t practice divination or seek omens.
27) Don’t cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.
28) Don’t cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves.
29) Don’t degrade your daughter by making her a prostitute, or the land will turn to prostitution and be filled with wickedness.
30) Observe my Sabbaths and have reverence for my sanctuary {2nd mention, also #3}.
31) Don’t turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them.
32) Stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God.
33) Don’t mistreat foreigners – treat as native-born. Love them as yourself {like #19}.
34) Don’t use dishonest standards when measuring length, weight or quantity – use honest scales, weights, ephah, and hin.
35) Keep all my decrees and all my laws and follow them.

Punishments For Sin – Leviticus 20 | “God said to Moses, tell the Israelites… ” they must consecrate themselves, keep God’s decrees and follow them. God will set His face against…
1) anyone who sacrifices their children to Molek shall be put to death – the community member shall stone them.
2) anyone who turns to and follows mediums and spiritists – God will cut them off from their people.
3) anyone who curses their mom or dad shall be put to death – their blood is on their own heads.
4) if a man commits adultery with another man’s wife both shall be put to death.
5) if a man has sexual relations with his dad’s wife both shall be put to death, their blood is on their own heads – he dishonored his dad.
6) if a man has sexual relations with his daughter-in-law both shall be put to death, their blood is on their own heads – it is a perversion.
7) if a man has sexual relations with another man, as one does with with a women, both shall be put to death, their blood is on their own heads – that is detestable.
8) if a man marries both a woman and her daughter -that is wicked – all 3 shall be burned with fire so there will be no wickedness among them.
9) if a woman approaches an animal to have sexual relations with it – both shall be put to death, their blood is on their own heads {what about if a man did that?}.
10) if a man marries his sister or half-sister and has sexual relations with her – it is a disgrace – both shall be publicly removed from their people. He dishonored her and is held responsible.
11) if a man has sexual relations with a woman during her period both are cut off from their people.
12) if a man has sexual relations with his aunt (mom’s or dad’s sister or uncle’s wife) both shall be held responsible and will die childless – dishonored uncle.
13) if a man marries his brother’s wife, it is an act of impurity – they will be childless – dishonored his brother.
14) must make a distinction between clean and unclean animals and birds.
15) don’t defile yourselves by anything that is unclean.
14) anyone who is a medium or spiritist among you must be stoned to death – their blood is on their own heads.
God continues to say, “Keep all my decrees and laws and follow them, so that the land where I am bringing you to live may not vomit you out. {there is that vomit again!} You must not live according to the customs of the nations I am going to drive out before you, they did all these things, I abhorred them. But I said to you, “You will possess their land; I will give it to you as an inheritance, a land flowing with milk and honey. I am the Lord your God, who has set you apart from the nations.”  You are to be holy to God because He is Holy, and He has set you apart from the nations to be His own.

Today’s New Testament reflection: Matthew 27:51-66

The Death of Jesus {cont.} – Matthew 27:51-56 | as Jesus gave up his spirit: 1) The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom 2) The earth shook 3) The rocks split 4) The tombs broke open – the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life {wait, what?! Praise God!}. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people {it’s no wonder why they didn’t come out until after Jesus’ resurrection}. The centurion and the others guarding Jesus saw all this and they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!” {ya think?!} Many women were there, watching from a distance (they’d followed Jesus from Galilee to care for His needs) – a few to note: Mary Magdalene {she had been delivered from 7 demons Luke 8:2), Mary the mother of James (the lesser) and Joseph (AKA: the other Mary, wife of Clopas, and sister of Mary Jesus’ mother John 19:25, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons (Salome, mother of James and John Mark 15:40).

The Burial of Jesus – Matthew 27:57-61 | a rich man, Joseph of Arimathea (he was a disciple of Jesus), went to Pilate to ask for Jesus’ body. Pilate agreed. Joseph took Jesus’ body, wrapped Him in a clean linen cloth, and placed Him in His own new tomb that he cut out of the rock. Joseph rolled a big stone in front of the entrance if the tomb and went away. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting opposite the tomb.

The Guard at the Tomb – Matthew 27:62-66 | the next day (after Preparation Day), the chief priests and  Pharisees went to Pilate saying, “Sir, we remember that while He was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’ So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, His disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that He has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.” “Take a guard,” Pilate agreed. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard {Thank God that they did – more proof! I feel like this and the resurrection of the holy dead – Matthew 27:53 – should be discussed and remembered more}.

I missed my 6PM CST submission again…by hours! Perhaps, I should stop keeping track LOL – just kidding! As discouraging as it is when I don’t meet my goals, keeping a record of hits and misses really does help keep me accountable. Thank You Jesus for keeping me going!

I hope you enjoyed day 47 🙂 I pray God spoke to you while you read this, I urge you to listen to whatever He put on your heart. I’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback. Jennifer – I Give God All The Glory

I am a daughter of God, a servant of the Lord, a wife to a patient husband, and a mama of two forgiving boys. God has placed these three men in my life needfully so. I thank Him for them everyday. And like so many of the Lord’s children, I am a work-of-glory-in-progress. I am on a journey to reclaim and renew my life in Christ. It took me 34 years to learn that when nothing else works, God does!

Not awkward at all Jennifer. Thank you for asking. For a dear friend who provides respite care for special needs children – adults and is under attack by her family – “don’t bring them around or to family gatherings.” How about you?

      • Good. Thank you. It will be my honor to pray for your sweet friend 🙂 As for me, I really need God to keep me focused and balanced. Seems like I’m all over the place lately 🙂

Thanks and have a blessed day!
